Shoulder pain – Impingement syndrome

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

Shoulder impingement is a syndrome involving tendonitis (inflammation of tendons) of the rotator cuff muscles as they pass through the subacromial space (shoulder joint).

Shoulder pain/Impingement is a common condition which develops over time and can get progressively worse. An impingement injury is caused due to inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons, nervous tissue or irritation and inflammation of the soft tissue surrounding the shoulder.
Most often this can be caused by overhead activities, faulty posture, inflamed tissue or bone growths.

The most common symptoms in shoulder impingement are pain, weakness and a loss of movement at the affected shoulder. The pain can be described as dull, rather than sharp, and is often worsened by shoulder overhead movement and may occur at night – especially when lying on the affected shoulder

Treatment;

Manual therapy mobilisations can be performed by a practitioner to reduce pain and regain mobility within the joints. If pain is the main symptom, soft tissue massage can also be used to relieve the tightness of surrounding muscles. If the pain is still persistent and the injury becomes chronic acupuncture may help to reduce the pain. However in the meantime we would recommend ice to reduce the pain and reduce any activity that is aggravating.
